Glass Shelves Cut to Size

When it comes to finding the perfect bespoke glass shelves to complement your interior style, you can count on The Glass Warehouse to provide you with exactly what you’re looking for.

Forget bulky dark shelving and storage that takes attention away from your décor, making a room seem instantly smaller.

Our floating glass shelves offer a minimalist solution that allows your display to be the focal point, enhancing the appearance of your bathroom, bedroom, kitchen, or living room without blocking the light.

Floating glass shelves for any space

Regardless of thickness, all of our custom glass shelves have a very high break point and can withstand extreme temperatures – so you can fit them almost anywhere around your home or workspace without worrying about breakages or damage.

In the unlikely occurrence of your glass shelf reaching the break point, the toughened glass will shatter into safer pieces that are smaller and rounded, making this storage solution ideal for almost any room.

Our bespoke glass shelves are multi-functional, versatile, durable, and low-maintenance. Whether you use them to display an array of products, create a feature element in your room, or simply use them for traditional storage, you can’t go wrong with timeless glass shelving.

How to measure custom glass shelves

Carefully measuring (and remeasuring) is an essential step before you can order. To get started, you should:

  • Measure the width

Moving from left to right, take measurements for where your new shelves will sit. To allow for wall discrepencies, check this in three places: the back, the middle, and the front, and use the smallest measurement when ordering.

  • Check the depth

Assess from the back wall out to the front edge, and also consider what you want to sit on the shelves. Very large items may need more depth.

  • Consider thickness

Glass thickness choices are determined by the weight of the items you want it to support. 6mm is best for small, light items, while 8-10mm is advised for heavier items or books.

  • Account for supports

Custom glass shelves will still need the relevant glass shelf brackets, so ensure these will fit alongside the shelf in the gap you have chosen.

Recommended fixings for floating glass shelves

Choosing the right glass shelf supports is the simplest way to ensure success and smooth installation. Consider the following key factors to fix your glass shelves in place with certainty that can last for years to come.

  1. Glass thickness and weight

Ensure the supports you choose match the glass thickness – you’ll need new ones if they can’t accommodate the thickness you’ve chosen. Likewise, check the load capacity; a pair generally supports around 10-20kg, but always check.

  1. The bracket type

The most secure option is a glass shelf clamp, which holds the glass tightly to prevent slipping. For floating glass shelves, choose specialist brackets that sit within or behind the shelf for a minimalist look.

  1. The environment

For glass bathroom shelves or kitchen options in high-moisture areas, opt for stainless steel or brass to prevent rust. If you are using them anywhere else, you can choose chrome-plated, zinc alloy, or aluminium options.

  1. Your wall type

Even if you choose the right fixings and install them correctly, glass shelves can fail if you choose the wrong connector.

For solid/brick walls, use standard screws and rawlplugs; for hollow stud walls, screw into the wooden stud for maximum strength; and for plasterboard/drywalls, use hollow wall anchors or toggle bolts.

Maximum loads for glass shelves

If properly supported, evenly loaded, and the correct fixings and shelf supports are used, even floating glass shelves can support a fair amount.

For a rough guide, check our handy comparison table:

Glass thickness  Typical maximum load
6 mm 11 – 14 kg
8 mm  18 – 23 kg
10 mm 27 – 36 kg
12 mm  36 – 45 kg
15 mm  50 – 100 kg
19 mm Over 100 kg

Can I fit my glass shelves anywhere around my home?

Our custom glass shelves are designed to suit various styles and taste requirements, so we’re confident we can offer something you’ll love.

What’s even better is that the sturdy structure of toughened glass allows you to fit your bespoke glass shelves pretty much anywhere around the home!

Are glass shelves easy to clean?

One of the reasons our glass shelves are so popular is largely due to how low-maintenance they are.

Although glass gathers dust fairly easily, they are also amongst the easiest materials to clean – simply dust with a dry cloth, then wipe with mild glass cleaner or a gentle soap and water solution, and polish to dry for a sparkling finish!

Are glass shelves safe to use?

Our glass shelves are incredibly safe because they are made using toughened glass, which is highly resistant to damage and shatters into tiny, blunt pieces, making it safer to deal with and less likely to cause any harm in the unlikely event that they do break.

What thickness should I choose for glass shelves?

Glass thickness

Best used for…

6 mm Smaller, lighter items, like toiletries, photos, or decor
8 mm Considered the domestic standard, it can hold slightly heavier loads but is not advised for books or more weighty items.
10 mm Can hold heavier loads, books, or wider spans
12 mm Ideal for kitchen items or more weighty display items
15 mm Considered exceptionally durable, these shelves can hold almost anything, from liquor bottles and food to heavy collectables, filled vases, or even glass and mirrors.
19 mm The most durable option, even floating glass shelves this thick can hold exceptional loads. From crockery and kitchenware to planters, coffee table books to sculptures and ceramics – it can hold it all!
