Product Description

Clear toughened glass cut to size gives you a transparent safety-glass panel made for the dimensions and shape of your project. Available in 6mm, 8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 15mm and 19mm thicknesses, it is supplied with polished edges as standard and can be prepared with holes and shaped details before toughening.

Whether you are making a room divider, furniture top, glazed door panel or another bespoke feature, clear glass lets light travel through the space and keeps the result visually simple. The advantage of ordering to your measurements is being able to accommodate openings and layouts that standard sheet sizes may not suit.

You can choose from rectangular, circular and many shaped profiles, including angled and raked designs. Processing options include drilled holes, notches and rounded corners. The dimensions entered for an individual side can be up to 3000mm, and a 2mm manufacturing tolerance should be allowed for when planning the fit.

The glass is thermally toughened after its cutting and processing stages. Relevant standards include BS EN 12150 for thermally toughened glass and BS EN 12600 for its impact classification. Optional polymer coating can help make routine cleaning easier, particularly where water marks are a concern.

Measure the finished opening and confirm any required clearances, fixing points and cut-outs before placing the order. Once a panel has been toughened, it cannot be cut or drilled without destroying its safety properties. The glass is supplied with the processing selected for the order; the supporting frame or fixings are specified separately.

For day-to-day care, use a soft cloth and a suitable glass cleaner. Protect exposed edges from knocks and choose the glass thickness and method of support to suit the application, especially where the panel carries loads or forms part of a safety barrier.

Custom Glass Thickness with Polished Edges

What is the main difference between toughened and laminated glass?

Toughened glass is designed to shatter into thousands of tiny, blunt pieces to reduce injury risk. Laminated glass, on the other hand, features a plastic (PVB) layer that holds the panel together if impacted. 

Both include a safety-conscious benefit, which is why toughened glass cut to size is often used in glass products for homes and businesses. But thanks to the structural maintenance afforded by laminated glass, this is considered to offer superior safety and security.

What safety standards does toughened glass comply with in the UK?

There are a few key standards toughened glass products need to comply with to be used and sold in the UK, including: 

  • BS EN 12150 – which covers the manufacturing and testing requirements of thermally toughened soda-lime silicate safety glass
  • BS EN 12600 – this standard covers the pendulum impact test that classifies glass based on how it breaks. Toughened glass must achieve a “Type C” safe breakage mode to be used. 
  • BS 6206 – this older, once commonly cited standard covers safety glazing, but it has largely been superseded by BS EN 12600 now.
  • BS 6262-4 – which sets out a code of practice for glazing in buildings.

Toughened safety glass is also discussed extensively in Approved Document K (England & Wales), to set out exactly where toughened glass needs to be used in critical locations (doors, low windows, bathrooms) to avoid injuries.If you have specific standards or legal parameters you need to make sure you cover, we can advise on suitability before you order if you get in touch beforehand!

How long does toughened glass last?

Toughened glass is a durable material that can remain in service for many years when correctly installed and maintained. Unlike some materials, glass does not significantly deteriorate with age under normal conditions. Its lifespan will depend on its application, installation, exposure and whether the edges become damaged.
