What are the advantages of a bespoke shower screen?
- It will fit your bathroom perfectly – Preventing leaks and giving your bathroom a more luxurious, high-end aesthetic.
- Endless customisation options – By designing the glass shower screen yourself, you can choose between frameless, semi-frameless, or framed designs, various glass types, and a selection of hardware finishes like matte black or brushed brass.
- Increased durability – Using toughened glass and high-quality glass fittings will help your bathroom renovation last as long as possible.
- Simpler maintenance – As bespoke designs fit the space exactly, keeping them clean and well-maintained is likely to be easier, ensuring mould and soap scum don’t accumulate.
- Improved safety – By keeping water in the shower tray or bath, the risk of slips and trips is minimised.
How to measure for a bespoke shower screen:
Depending on the shape and size of the area, you’ll need to follow our step-by-step instructions for simple, stress-free measurement.
- Draw a rough diagram of the shower area and keep a pen/pencil handy – This is where you’ll note down all measurements (in mm) as you take them, so they don’t get lost!
- Measure the width at three points:
- The horizontal distance between finished walls at the bottom (on the tray or floor)
- Across the middle
- At the top, where you want the screen to end.
- Measure the height, vertically, from the top edge of the shower tray or floor to the desired finish height.
- Check if the walls are plumb with a spirit level. Record if the wall is out of plumb and by how much if this applies.
- Measure the space around the shower for swinging doors to ensure the glass shower screen won’t hit anything as it opens.
To get accurate numbers, we recommend using a metal tape measure and only measuring once the tiling, grouting, and silicone sealing are complete, as this could affect the measurements.

What thickness of glass is best for a bespoke shower screen?
While it can depend on your specifications, we recommend:
| Toughened glass thickness |
Best used for |
Pros |
Cons |
| 6mm |
Framed units and budget screens |
|
- Can feel less sturdy
- Has more flex in large panels
|
| 8mm |
Standard frameless doors and wetrooms |
- Durable
- Premium feel
- Good value
|
- Needs heavier hardware as it is heavier than 6mm glass
|
| 10mm |
Large walk-in shower panels and luxury |
- Maximum rigidity
- Design-led
- Sturdy feel
|
- Most premium option and pricetag
- Very heavy, so will need robust glass fixings

Are shower screens easy to fit?
Depending on your DIY confidence level and the design of your chosen glass shower screen, the difficulty level can differ.
If you are keen to have a go yourself, you may have success if:
- It is a bath screen that is attached to one side
- It is a framed enclosure
- Your walls are completely plumb
- The toughened glass is light
However, if your project involves:
- Very heavy glass screens or doors
- Frameless screens
- Sliding screens
- Walls that are out of plumb
- Very heavy panels
You might be best leaving it to an experienced contractor team for the best results.
