We use a variety of materials for our glass tops, including clear and low-iron toughened glass, which is renowned for its extensive heat resistance and attractive design, making it perfect for kitchen table tops or dining table tops.

Standard toughened glass can have a slight greenish coloured tint due to iron deposits, which is usually quite visible around the edge. So, for maximum transparency, choose low-iron glass for the most transparent finish.

What is the best thickness for my glass table top size?

When selecting a glass table top, ideally, you should avoid anything too thin and only use toughened glass for long-term durability. The larger the glass topper, and the heavier the intended use, the thicker the glass should be, too. 

You also need to consider the supports that will be holding it up – e.g. the load-bearing capacity of the table legs or base you’ve chosen. If the glass is too heavy, the base may not be sturdy enough to support it. 

Likewise, if the glass isn’t strong enough for the intended use, it may crack under pressure, which is why glass table tops should be a minimum of 6mm thick. 

At The Glass Warehouse, all made-to-measure glass table tops are manufactured with toughened glass for safety. We provide glass tops in several thicknesses, ranging from 6mm to 15mm – and possibly 19mm, by special request only. Just get in touch if you aren’t sure what you need.

What glass is used for table tops?

For a glass top that can withstand use and pressure, we recommend opting for toughened safety glass in an appropriate thickness for the type of table, legs or base, and location.

Not only will this ensure your table remains safe and usable and that the glass table top is robust, but it will also provide a higher level of safety in the unlikely case of it breaking.

This is because safety glass, when broken, comes away in small, blunt pieces with a duller edge. This can significantly reduce the risk of harm, as it is much safer than standard glass, which shatters into sharp and jagged pieces.

It’s especially important to ensure safety if accidental breakages happen in settings like bars and cafes, which is why toughened glass tabletops are preferred for restaurant furnishings.

Where can you use toughened glass table tops?

It’s possible to install toughened glass table tops anywhere you might use a table – whether indoors or outdoors, on a desk, dining table, bistro table set, and more. 

Whether you use a glass table top for a brand new custom table, or upcycle an older piece of furniture, a stylised glass top can quickly elevate a space by adding both an elegant and practical touch at the same time.

They can also be used as a glass table cover – for example, over a traditional wooden table top to give it a more modern look and protect the wooden table top from scratches.

Do you offer laminate table tops?

We do stock toughened laminated glass at The Glass Warehouse, and the thickness will depend on the size of the table. In most cases, glass thicknesses from 10.8mm up to 32mm will be perfectly sufficient for a glass table top.

Toughened laminated glass is much thicker glass made by combining a pair of toughened glass panels into one by sealing them together with a plastic interlayer.

The middle layer supports the structure by keeping the glass on either side in place even if it cracks into pieces, preventing it from shattering everywhere. This makes laminate table tops much safer for heavy-duty furniture, perhaps in a busy public establishment.

If choosing toughened laminate glass, you should be aware that you cannot change the colour, as we currently do not offer laminated tinted glass or frosted glass.
