How to choose the right glass table top?

Choosing the perfect table to compliment your space is no easy feat – so when you throw bespoke options into the mix it can feel like an impossible task. However, there are certain things you can consider when it comes to choosing the perfect glass table top for you, which should help guide you in the decision-making process.

Factors such as what the table will be used for, and where in your home it will be located, should have a direct influence over the type of glass table top you go for. A family with young children or boisterous pets may want to consider a toughened glass finish. Whilst those looking to use the table as a decorative focal point, which won’t see much use, may decide to go for a more decorative approach such as crackle glass or frosted glass.

The options are limitless with bespoke glass table tops, and you can go as simple or decorative as you like. Although, having a vision before committing will help you choose the best shape and size for your requirements.

What is the best thickness for a glass table top?

The ideal thickness of your glass table top will vary, again depending on how you intend to use it. As standard, annealed glass which is being used as a protective layer on an existing table top should only need to be between 4mm and 6mm in thickness.

However, if you are opting for a toughened glass table top, our collection of bespoke glass ranges from 4mm – 19mm.

It is important to remember that different types of glass will vary in appearance. Thicker glass will look more substantial in a space, and the type of glass you use will determine the final finish. Our clear and low-iron glass table tops offer a crystal-clear aesthetic, without that green tinge associated with many panes of glass.

Are glass table tops tempered?

Not all glass table tops are tempered. However, there are a number of benefits to doing so, tempered glass is extremely tough to break. Therefore making it ideal for a busy household. Although, it will shatter into small pebble-like pieces if it is broken. Which is considerably less dangerous than regular shards of glass.

Can glass table tops be cut?

At The Glass Warehouse, we take care of every element of your bespoke glass table tops design. This means that from helping you pick the best material, to design and finish – we’re on hand to help.

Once you have decided on a material and width, we will then be able to cut your glass to size. This means that whether you require a large centrepiece glass table top, or an unusual shape to fit into a small or awkward space, we can do it.

It is important to note, once a piece of glass has been tempered, it cannot then be cut. So, it is important to decide on a final design before the tempering process takes place to avoid disappointment.

How do you protect a glass table top?

Glass furniture is surprisingly practical and versatile, as well as being great to look at. However, it is important to take care of glass table tops so that they last for many years to come.

Don’t worry – we’re not suggesting you keep your glass table covered up or leave it unused to avoid damage. There are some things you can do to keep your table top sparkling, regardless of how often you use it!

Avoid using any cleaning products which contain ammonia or acid, and don’t use abrasive materials to clean the surface. We suggest using a soft cleaning rag. One which is gentle on the surface, rather than paper towels, as they will often leave behind a difficult residue.
