What is a low iron mirror?

Low iron mirrors simply remove the green tint often seen in standard mirror glass. While it’s still transparent, clear glass typically has a green-ish hue, which is especially visible in the darker colour around the edges.

The blue-green tint comes from the iron (ferrous oxide) used in glass manufacturing – so, to remove it, less iron is used to produce a much clearer glass. Low iron glass is essentially the ultra-clear version of standard glass.

This therefore offers a higher-quality image with optimal clarity, ideal for glass mirrors when a crystal-clear reflection is required.

Low iron mirrors are highly popular in commercial buildings thanks to the crisp reflections this extra-clear glass can provide – making it a popular choice for upscale establishments like restaurants, hotels, or boutiques. However, these glass mirrors are also useful in the home for elevating vanity tables and dressing rooms, for example.

Should I use foil backing for bathroom mirrors?

It is typically recommended that some kind of backing is applied to all mirrors in order to protect the silvering from deterioration. However, when it comes to fitting a bathroom mirror, using a foil backing becomes even more important.

In damp environments where moisture can easily build up, like bathrooms or kitchens, water and mineral deposits can have a direct impact on the quality of the mirror. Moisture can gather behind the mirror and cause gradual erosion, especially with corrosive salt that can lead to rust.

With the simple application of a foil backing, you can protect the glass from being affected as easily by water ingress, helping your investment to go much further.

At The Glass Warehouse, most of the made-to-order mirror designs we supply are available with the option of foil backing, which you can select when customising your order if you will be installing your mirror in a bathroom or a more moist environment.

Will clear backing stop mirrors from breaking?

Mirrors with safety backing applied are typically much sturdier when it comes to enduring impacts.

Made from polypropylene, the backing is applied on the underside of the mirror paint and serves as a barrier that can absorb and withstand the majority of the pressure if an impact were to occur.

As standard, safety backing is applied not only to prevent a mirror face from breaking, but also to reduce the risk of injury, as it can prevent sharp shards of glass from forming by holding the pieces in place against the backing.

However, it is important to bear in mind that whilst clear backing can have a huge impact in stopping your mirror from shattering into dangerous pieces, it cannot guarantee that the mirror won’t break.

Applying clear backing will undoubtedly strengthen the surface of the mirror, but if the impact is strong enough, your mirror could still be damaged or break entirely.

It’s also important to be aware that safety backing is not the same as foil backing and the two are not interchangeable – you cannot use adhesives directly on safety backing, as you can with foil backing or directly on the back of the mirror.

What are the different types of bespoke mirrors?

When it comes to creating high-quality yet affordable bespoke mirrors, The Glass Warehouse has everything you need and more!

Thanks to our state-of-the-art-technology and team of in-house specialists, we can manufacture a wide variety of bespoke frameless mirrors to suit all tastes and styles.

Our selection of popular frameless mirror designs includes:

Square, rectangle, or round mirrors – Traditional and angular or contemporary and curved, choose a mirror shape that fits into your chosen setting perfectly.

Free-standing leaner mirrors – If you don’t want to mount your mirror, you can always lean a large mirror against a wall instead for a more care-free look and flexible positioning.

Frameless wavy mirrors – The trend of pond-shaped or pebble-shaped mirrors with asymmetrical edges is only growing; who wouldn’t love the whimsy of a puddle-shaped mirror?

Low iron bespoke mirrors – Perfect for superior image quality when you want a super-clear reflection, our low iron mirrors offer unrivalled clarity with reduced green tint.

Coloured mirrors – Looking to create a truly unique focal point? Our range of coloured mirror glass is a huge hit for those looking for something a little different, with tinted mirrors available in silver, grey, bronze, and antique bronze.

Any of these styles could make the perfect modern feature for any home or commercial space. Simply contact our team if you have any questions about our custom-made frameless glass mirrors!

How do I create a mirrored wall?

If you’re looking to reap all the benefits that mirrored glass has to offer, then wall cladding may be just the thing for you. Ideal for enlarging the appearance of a smaller space, enhancing the level of light, and creating a visually interesting focal point in any room – mirrored walls are fast becoming an interior trend.

Here at The Glass Warehouse, not only do we supply a range of bespoke mirrored glass that’s perfect for wall cladding, but we can also supply mirrored glass that’s suitable for furniture cladding.

So, even if a full mirror wall or room of mirror walls isn’t right for you, items such as tables, chests of drawers, and other everyday furniture can now be given the mirror treatment, too!

Not sure where to begin with creating a mirrored wall? The first thing to decide is which area you wish to embellish, and the style of glass you’re going for. From low iron glass for clarity to tinted glass for coloured mirrors, there are many designs you can choose from, so take your time deciding.

The good news is that fitting wall cladding is much like applying tiles, but without the need for grouting! The most important step is to ensure the surface you’re working on has been thoroughly cleaned, with all dirt and dust removed to prevent complications with adhesives.

You may opt to lay your mirrored wall cladding in straight lines, or you could go for a specific layout or pattern, potentially with gaps in between for a stylised design – the choice is yours and will vary depending on the look you’re hoping to achieve.

Remember, our team of experts are always on hand to help guide you throughout the entire process. Whatever your query, don’t hesitate to give us a call whenever you need our insight.

How do you clean a glass mirror?

Streaks and spots on mirrors can be the bane of any business or homeowner’s existence, as they need to be cleaned quickly to restore their pristine appearance and usefulness as reflective surfaces.

Luckily, glass is one of the easiest materials to clean, because any build-up of grime on the smooth surface can be wiped off with relatively little effort. This is especially true if you opt for a glass mirror with a polymer coating that can repel scum and rust, which is an available extra when you order one of our bespoke mirrors from The Glass Warehouse.

The basic tips that should help you to keep mirrors clean and smudge-free are to never use chemical cleaning agents or abrasive cleaning tools, to tackle stains as soon you spot them, and to wipe in a side-to-side direction while moving top to bottom to avoid messy streaks.

A solution of warm water and soap and a soft microfibre cloth should be essentially all you need to wipe a dirty mirror clean and achieve a crystal-clear reflection again.
