What are the benefits of Juliet balconies?
Juliet balconies bring to mind the dramatic romance of Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet, from which they take their name. Across Europe, a Juliet balcony traditionally features wrought iron railings, but these days, a glass balcony with or without a steel top rail is the favoured look.
Thanks to the modern elegance of toughened laminated glass, our striking Juliet balcony systems are sure to elevate your home or business with a sense of sophistication.
Using clear glass for the balcony balustrade not only provides protection against the drop between floor levels but also dramatically improves aesthetic appeal, creating a chic façade from the outside and enhancing interior design from the inside.
The minimalist glass and metal materials can fit in with most décor schemes to suit your property both indoors and out, guaranteeing an eye-catching feature.
At The Glass Warehouse, the systems we offer are available with stainless steel or anodised aluminium fittings. The latter can be customised with an RAL matt finish in black, white, or grey.
Not only are Juliet balconies compact, beautiful, and durable, but they also require less time and work to install – meaning they can transform your property much faster, for a lower cost. Giving you better access to fresh air and natural light with less effort!
Whether you have financial or spatial constraints limiting your renovation choices, a Juliet balcony can provide the perfect solution for an affordable and space-saving balcony.
Do Juliet balconies need planning permission?
As Juliet balconies don’t feature an external platform and typically don’t require extra structural alterations, they’re usually classed as permitted developments. This means you most likely shouldn’t need to ask your local authority for approval to add a glass Juliet balcony.
Unlike traditional projecting balconies, Juliet balconies shouldn’t need planning permission – as long as they don’t have a platform, extend outwards less than 300mm from the wall, and aren’t located on the principal elevation (the front of the building) with privacy concerns.
However, it’s always worth double-checking, because there are some conditions where a Juliet balcony might still require planning permission – and if you proceeded to install the balcony without approval, you could be fined and asked to remove it.
If you’re making structural changes to install the balcony, such as making a window larger or converting it into a door, you may need approval from the local authorities first to make sure you’re complying with local development and national safety regulations.
Please note that it will be your responsibility as a customer to make sure that your Juliet balcony installation complies with British Safety Standards and planning permission requirements, as The Glass Warehouse only supplies your order as specified by you.
